The 3rd Annual Fashion Trashion event at the University of Minnesota, Morris. This event is run by the Studio Art folks, who have students in the intro 3-D studio course create costumes out of recycled, reused, or repurposed materials. This is a always a huge success, with lots of really creative work and a ton of fun for the audience.

Jess Larson is the MC, Jennie Nellis taught the course this year, and the judges are Troy Goodnough (Sustainability Coordinator), Jennifer Deane (History), Jacquie Johnson (Chancellor), Ray Schultz (Theatre), and Hilda Ladner (Multi-ethnic Programs)

DigiLegs II

This is a High Definition video of our DigiLegs, showing how they’re put on and demonstrating their all-terrain capability. Regrettably my leg extensions are in stasis, but my co-inventors are going ahead with their own design. Their leg extensions are being made by a company called Area 51 in the UK. This company just put up a web page this week announcing their own version. It is good to see that they have overcome the enormous difficulties in bringing any such invention to the market. Bravo, my hats off to them! area51.co

Continued from last photo

Here is one shoe completed. I used more plant tags on the straps. Now, these look so simple to create don’t they? But not only did I have to be super careful to turn in all the staples so my model Nancy’s feet would not get scratched or stabbed, but the Astroturf is really quite a challenge to work with. It shreds and unravels quite easily. Cutting the strips and gluing down was time consuming to get it just right. Sometimes the easiest looking thing is the opposite to fabricate.

Embellishments: recycled plastic plant tags, and found remnant of green Astroturf.

Roberto Cavalli Fall/Winter 2012-2013

“An earthly paradise populated by creatures of fantasy… the Eden of femininity … my creativity is expressed through clothes which make the Cavalli woman a sensual and mysterious being.” Roberto Cavalli The prints come from hand-painted canvas, exhibited backstage at the fashion show, representing animal skins. The ‘trompe l’œil’ effect is enhanced by the illusory mix of pythons leather printed with tiger or jaguar motifs, furs printed with python motif, pony skins transformed into crocodile. Imaginary animals from pure fantasy are born. The silhouette: very short or maxi. Mini skirts or ‘balloon’ dresses show the legs and are created with three-dimensional placed embroideries, in brocade or filleted fur, printed or inlaid. Maxi skirts made of python leather painted with tiger motif, lasered mink with crocodile effect or cashmere cloth are combined with jacquard mohair sweaters or with entirely embroidered t-shirts. Sculpture dresses in printed silk mousseline do not follow the line of the body but they redesign it and open in large ruffles and flounces in silk organza embellished with tiny pleated ruffles and black lace. Haute artisanship prevails throughout the collection. Leather punched sequin mixed with micro feathers. Embroidery in relief with three-dimensional effects that recreate animal mantles or reptile scales. The jackets and coats, made of black python leather or printed with ocelot or tiger mantle effect, have structured shoulders and a narrow waistline …
